Thunderclap headache is a severe, sudden headache. It only takes a few seconds or minutes for the headache to reach its maximum intensity. Usually headache starts subsiding in one hour, but it can last for more than one week for some patients. Thunderclap headache may be early warning signs of a potentially life-threatening disease, such as subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, carotid artery dissection, hypertensive emergency, cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage. You should see your health care provider immediately if you have thunderclap headache.
