Toe walking in children

Walking on toes is quite common for children who just learn how to walk. More than half children who used to walk on toes will stop doing so at about 5 years old. Most of the children will not have any developmental or neurological problems. Toe walking before age 6 rarely needs treatment. Toe walking after 6 years old may be a problem. Toe walking children may have muscle rigidity and heel tendon pain. They can be relieved by stretching exercises. Toe walking may be accompanied by diseases such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. If toe walking has already caused shortening of the Achilles tendon or calf muscles, surgery may be required.
