Tongue tie (ankyloglossia)

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a thin strip of tissue connecting the bottom of tongue and the bottom of mouth. People with normal tongue-tie can move tongue freely. They can push tongue tip out of mouth or lick upper gum. In the development process of tongue at early childhood, tongue-tie gradually retrieves to the base of tongue. Tongue tip is far enough from tongue-tie when a child is 2 years old. For a small number of children, tongue-tie may be too short. For infants, short tongue-tie can affect milk suction. For older children, short tongue-tie can affect speech. A simple surgery to cut tongue-tie can be done if necessary.
