Trichinosis is caused by infection of Trichinella spiralis (a parasite). Human acquire trichinosis commonly because of eating pork or other meat products which are not fully cooked. Symptoms in the acute phase include allergic reactions (fever, eyelid swelling, skin rashes), followed by severe muscle pain, and weakness in arms or legs. Thiabendazole is effective in treating trichinosis. It can inhibit and kill the larvae. It can also alleviate pain, fever and inflammation. If body temperature is too high with signs of heart involvement, central nervous system involvement and toxemia, adrenal cortex hormone therapy can be supplemented.
