Truncus arteriosus

Truncus arteriosus is a condition that two major arteries from the left and right ventricles are merged into a single artery, thus blood from the left and right ventricles is also mixed. It can cause pulmonary hypertension and other severe circulatory problems. Patients often have shortness of breath, fatigue, heart failure, recurrent pneumonia and poor growth. The disease is a severe type of cardiovascular malformations and the prognosis is poor. Surgical repair before infant patient is 2 month old is generally preferred.
