Urethra (urethritis)

Urethritis is infection and inflammation of the urethra, the narrow tube carring urine out of the body. It is usually caused by bacteria infection. Symptons in men include burning sensatin during urination, pus or mucous discharge from penis, burning and itching sensation at the penis tip, or blood in urine or semen. Symptoms in women include painful urination and frequent urgent urination. If the infection spreads to the vagina or other part of the urinary tract, a woman may feel abdominal pain, unusually vaginal discharge, fever, or chills. Treatment include oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin (Cipro), levofloxacin, (Levaquin) and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra). All sex partners should also be treated.
